The national conference "POSTRACCOLTA 2017" was organized on 28 and 29 September 2017 by Professor Anna Mensuali and Professor Pietro Tonutti of Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, within the scientific activity of the “Postharvest" group of the Italian Horticultural Society. The program included international seminars and one day dedicated to invitation, posters and oral communications selected by the Scientific Committee to represent the most significant issues of Italian research in the postharvest field.

In line with the mission of the Sant'Anna School of Advances Studies, we chose to focus the conference on the formation of young people by devoting them the first day of the meeting. The seminar series “Advances in Postharvest Sciences” of September 28 was organized in collaboration with the Master's Degree in Molecular Biotechnologies at the University of Pisa and the Doctoral Program of Agrobiosciences of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. The participation was extended to all PhD students interested in deepening basic aspects in the physiology of horticulture species. It was attended by Italian and foreign doctoral students coming from several universities.

Seminars were held by the Professor Shimon Meir, Senior Researcher at the Department of Postharvest Science of Fresh Produce of the Agricultural Research Organization ARO at Bet Dagan, Israel. At present time he is visitor professor at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies. Maarten Hertog, Research leader of computational plant biology, Biosystems Department, MeBioS Division, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Bart Nicolaï, Department chair Biosystems Department - MeBioS Division, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Director of Flanders Centre of Postharvest Technology.

On September 29, the workshop was attended by almost fifty researchers who presented their works on the main issues of postharvest science as posters or oral communication. The presence of Professors Meir, Hertog and Nicolai as invited speakers for the plenary lectures of the three scientific sections contributed to the internationalization of the event.

At the end of the day, the periodical meeting of the Postharvest Working Group of the SOI was held, led by Professor Antonio Ferrrante from University of Milano.
